Stop Telling My Daughter She's Beautiful

“Stop Telling My Daughter She’s Beautiful” aren’t words that usually come out of a mother’s mouth. Before we go too far, we’d like to mention that this mother, Katie, in fact, does think her daughter is beautiful, but that's not the only thing about her that is worthy of praise.

“Complimenting girls on their looks can lead them to not valuing intelligence,” says Katie. Instead of complimenting children on something they have no control over, such as looks, she argues that whenever possible compliment a child’s skills like their sense of adventure, their intelligence, their listening—really there are a lot of things that children are doing well at. So next time you see a child shredding on the slopes or painting, encourage that, not just their looks.
