Transforming Nepal’s Mountain Guide Industry

Lucky, Dicky and Nicky Chhetri moved from India to Nepal in the early 1990s where the three sisters started a restaurant and lodge for trekkers. While running the lodge, they heard many stories about adventures from the tourists, but the stories that stood out were the ones from female clients about male guides who abused their positions.

Something had to change. The sisters launched two businesses which have changed the way women were perceived in the local mountaineering community. Empowering Women of Nepal is a nonprofit organization that supports and trains local women to become female mountain guides, and 3 Sisters is a company that employs female mountain guides to lead treks in the Himalayas.

Read more about how The Chhetri sisters are creating opportunities for women to challenge traditional gender roles with mountaineering and building sustainable tourism in Nepal for the women and men who work there.
